About 2000 years old, this must be one of the most ancient corpuses of Women Poetry in world literature, giving it an intrinsic importance.
A unique feature of Sangam Poetry is its organic linkage to Nature. The situations, similes, metaphors and leitmotifs are all intertwined with Nature, and are marked by sheer lyrical finesse and poetic allure.
Female sexuality, the passionate bond between the girl and her lover, the agony of separation, outpouring of suppressed ardour and a celebration of the female body have a strong presence in these poems. This has potential value in sociologi- cal and cultural-anthropological studies of ancient societies from a feminist perspective.
Dr.K.S.SUBRAMANIAN (1937) served the Gov- ernment of India (IRAS) from 1960 to 1975 and the Asian Development Bank from 1975 to 1998, retiring as a Director.
He has translated about 40 Tamil literary works into English: novels, novellas, short stories, essays and poetry. His Papers in Tamil language on literary, social and developmental themes have appeared in 8 volumes.
He is a Trustee of MOZHI Trust, a resource centre for Tamil language and culture. He is a former member of the Tamil Advisory Board of Sahitya Akademi.
